Jim Engels led Ponderosa to double-digit win totals each of the past four years.

Six matches into the 2016 season, it’s clear that No. 4 Ponderosa is a team capable of making a 4A playoff run. The Mustangs return most of their main contributors from last year’s quarterfinal appearance, and despite back-to-back league losses to Mountain Vista and No. 3 Rock Canyon, they have the combination of talent and experience to make noise in the second half of the fall.

Offensively, Ponderosa is paced by senior Parker Klein (six goals) and junior Slade Walker (five goals), while freshman Cameron Klein and sophomore Cole Keith have split time in net so far. The Mustangs host D’Evelyn on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., followed by league matches at ThunderRidge (Sept. 20), versus Douglas County (Sept. 27) and versus Heritage (Sept. 29).

Colorado Sports Network editor Kyle Newman caught up with Ponderosa head coach Jim Engels to discuss his team’s prospects this fall, the striking ability of Klein and Walker, key improvements to be made in the second half of the season and much more. The full one on one:
